Our New Book on Smartphone-Based Physics Labs Is Featured at Photonics West

We are pleased to share that our forthcoming book, SmartIPL: Smartphone-Based Introductory Physics Labs, currently in press with SPIE Press, is being featured at Photonics West. The book introduces a modern and accessible approach to teaching experimental physics by transforming smartphones into powerful tools for hands-on laboratory learning.

SmartIPL will present eight carefully designed laboratory modules aligned with introductory mechanics courses. Using everyday materials, smartphone video recording, and free analysis software, students can collect and analyze real experimental data while developing essential skills in measurement, modeling, uncertainty analysis, and scientific reasoning.

Rather than relying solely on automated smartphone sensors or simulations, the labs emphasize video-based data extraction. By tracking motion frame by frame, students will engage directly with the experimental process, strengthening foundational laboratory skills that are central to physics education. Optional extensions will allow motivated learners to explore smartphone sensors and more advanced experimental variations.

Designed for flexibility, SmartIPL labs can be implemented in traditional classrooms, remote or hybrid courses, and informal learning environments. The framework supports college-level introductory physics while remaining accessible to high school students and the general public.
