I'm excited to share a new project that’s close to my heart—a cartoon collection titled Thoughts on PhD Training, now available online at:
This collection grew out of a seminar I began teaching in 2022 at the University of Georgia, aimed at helping incoming graduate students reflect on the skills, mindset, and support systems needed to navigate the PhD journey. Many of the ideas stem from over two decades of mentoring experience—and from the invaluable lessons I received from my own advisors and colleagues.
Instead of a traditional monograph, I’ve turned these insights into illustrated slides to make them more accessible, engaging, and (hopefully) memorable. The series explores key themes such as:
Motivation, mindset, and managing expectations
The evolving roles of student, researcher, and teacher
Collaboration, resilience, and self-care
Building a strong support system
Planning, productivity, and career development
Whether you're just starting your PhD, mentoring graduate students, or reflecting on your own academic path, I hope this guide sparks thought and conversation. Feedback is warmly welcomed—and if you find it helpful, please feel free to share it with students or colleagues.
Your journey matters. Let’s make it better—together.
Warm regards,
Yiping Zhao
